Amateur Radio spans the whole

Hello all friends of Amateur Radio !

My name is Ullrich "Ulli" Helgert and I am living in the southwestern part of Munich very closed to the Forstenrieder Park which is a very good place for relaxing after a hard day of work (or HAM Radio, hi). I was born in 1943 near Chemnitz in the former DDR.

I am married since 1965 and we have a daughter which was born in 1970. Unfortunatelly none of them is interested in amateur radio and therefore not licensed. I am retired since 1996 and so I have plenty of time for doing my hobby, hi.

For the DXCC I have all valid countries and some deleted worked.

My favorite hobby is amateur radio and I am licensed since October 1981. After starting on CB I would get an amateur radio licence as soon as possible and also in the highest class "B" with CW included. And I got it!

I also like travelling around the world very much.

In 1982 I tried to get a license for Tunisia 3V8, and, thank godness, I got it. The call was 3V8AL.So I have been QRV in August 1982 and for the WWDX-CW Contest in November 1982, with my friend Georg, DK3QJ, which we won as a country winner with a total score of 1,517,943 points.

That inspired me to do some more DX-peditions.

With my very good friend George, DK3QJ, I started a trip to the Maldive Islands ( 8Q7QJ and 8Q7BW ) in November 1983 for the CQWWDX-CW contest. We worked a lot of stations but mostly EU's before the contest. In the contest we worked only 9 or 10 hours then our Collins linear crashed ( valve damaged ) and that has killed my IC-740 transceiver. So at least we had a lot of time to do swimming and diving and sitting on the bar, hi. Then there was a big hole in doing dx-peditions, other problems I had to clear first.

After that time my friend went to Jordan for bussiness and he invited me to visit him. I did not say " NO " and so we tried to get a licence for JY for me. Well, I got it. The call was JY8YB. Now I worked several times with this callsign and did more than 23.000 QSO s.

In 1996 we worked in CQWWDX-CW-Contest as JY8B multi/single, George JY9QJ ( DK3QJ ), Steve JY8SP (K7SP) and myself. The total score of this contest was 4,810,220 points but not enough for winning the 1st place in Asia. It was only #4.

In the WPX CW-Contest 1998 we worked also M/S (JY9QJ, JY8YB) with the contest call JY8B. And we weren´t able to reach the 1st place in Asia with 8,640,832 pts too. There were about 50,000 pts missing.

At least I was several times in JY and to different M/S contests with the call JY9QJ and I enjoyed it very much.

Many thanks to Georg and his wife Jessie for their hospitality and also to Mohamad, JY4MB, for the help in getting a license.

George´s contract in Jordan was finnished at the beginning of the year 2000 it would be not so easy to go there doing amateur radio and working in the big contests. George went back to Germany hoping to get a new job somewhere abroad with a chance for a licence there. And it should be a rare DX country, hi.

In the beginning of 2002 George signed a new workcontract for some more years in Jordan. After a long search he found finally a new house, as his former house which was empty for almost two years had been rented out just three months before his arrival. Therefore he had to deal again with all the problems of searching a house, antennas and TVI at the neighbours. Fortunaltely his old tower was still available with Mohammed, JY4MB. There was also a TH11DX and a Create 40 m beam available in Mohammed' s store. The 80 m rotary dipole had been brought back from Munich and I got a shortened 160 m dipole from Kelemen for him, which is 48 meters long. Additionally there is a Alpha-Delta 160 - 30 meter sloper antenna in reserve. He is using his old equipment, an ICOM IC-775DSP with a IC-4KL linear and CT as logging program. And of course I will be again the qsl manager. The first batch of 12.000 qsl cards have been already ordered with the printshop. See some pictures of the antenna system in the photogallery.

I am also the QSL manager of  3V8AL,  8Q7BW,  JY8YB and  JY8B.

Since we have two TV satellite receiving antennas on top of our blocks of tenements I have a lot of problems with TVI in my neighbourhood when I am running high power. So I decided to work only QRP for a while and try to reach as much DXCC countries as possible. I have now 243 countries worked since I started QRP in 1998. Confirmed are just 181. With the right technique and a little bit of luck you can also catch rare DX-pedition QSOs. In CQWWDX-CW  contest 2000 I reached the1.place in DL with 5 Watts as SO/10 m/A and 139.515 points.

As George returned to Amman, Jordan, and is busy with his work and the radio in his new house, it was no big surprise for me, that he invited me to come to Jordan to participate together in the CQ WW CW in November 2003. As mentioned above, I am somewhat restricted participating in contest from my own station in Germany and therefore I gladly accepted the invitation, to participate under my own call sign JY8YB (or maybe my old contest call JY8B). George agreed and then I flew to Amman on November 19th, 2003. After my arrival I was very much welcomed by George and his wife and I felt immediately like at home, as already in my previous visits. Unfortunately I was sick after my arrival (maybe change of climate), we are all getting older, and I was not interested in playing with the radio for a few days. But after three days I was ok again and was sitting in front of the radio handling the pile ups. in CW. Huge pile ups, as in the years before, have supported my rehabilitation process. For the first time from Jordan, I worked also RTTY, and in the end I had 600 RTTY qso's in my log. Then we participated in the CQ WW CW as M/S and like in the years before, we simply could not work enough multipliers to get near to the top. Although 10 meters was nicely open, we had nice runs on all bands, but since the Europeans are very strong here, and therefore sometimes you simply cannot hear the nice multipliers from the Caribbean, North America, Africa and South America. Never mind, it is important to participate and we had a lot of fun. Contest results are under the link ´Contest scores´.

I would like to say thank you to George and his wife for their hospitality and of course to Mohammed, JY4MB for issuing my licence under my previous call JY8YB.

Thank you very much for
